Choose the level according to what you need to do after the course: lead audits, carry out internal audits, build a management system or deepen specialist knowledge.

If you audit only your own organisation, Internal Auditor training may be enough. If you will lead audit teams or pursue a professional auditor credential, Lead Auditor training is normally the right route.

Becoming a professionally certified Lead Auditor normally takes two things: training and a separate personnel certification process. Passing a course proves your knowledge and assessment result; it does not by itself grant every auditor credential.

For management system auditing, ISO 19011:2026 is the current international guidance; courses aimed at certification body work also address the relevant ISO/IEC 17021-1 requirements.

Prerequisites differ by standard, course and certification scheme, so check the individual course page rather than relying on a universal rule. In practice a working knowledge of the standard you will audit matters most: Lead Auditor courses spend their time applying requirements to real audit situations rather than introducing the standard. Personnel certification schemes may also require documented audit experience beyond successful course completion.

The standing of a course comes from the provider's certification and its assessment arrangements, not from whether it is delivered online or in a room.

Choose a provider whose certification, course scope, trainers and assessment process you can verify independently. Before enrolling, check:

• the provider in the relevant official register
• the exact standard and edition taught
• whether your course sits inside the provider's certified scope
• the trainers' audit and implementation experience
• duration and delivery format
• the assessment method and pass requirements
• which certificate is issued on completion
• whether the course supports the personnel certification route you intend to follow

Do not choose a course only because a page uses words such as “accredited”, “international” or “certified”. The underlying certification should be independently verifiable.

Check the edition before you book, because several management system and auditing standards are changing.
