What internal auditor training covers

Internal auditing is first-party auditing: your organisation checking itself. An internal auditor course teaches you to audit against the requirements of the standard and against your own documented processes, then report findings in a way that drives correction and improvement rather than defensiveness.

Course content typically covers the clause-by-clause requirements of the standard, the internal audit requirements the standard itself sets, audit planning and checklists, evidence gathering by interview and observation, writing nonconformities with a clear requirement-evidence-conclusion structure, and following up corrective action.

The technique follows ISO 19011 guidance, scaled to internal audit practice.

What does an internal auditor do?

An internal auditor checks that their own organisation does what its management system says it does, and that the system meets the requirements of the standard. The work is first-party auditing: planning an audit against a programme, gathering evidence by interview, observation and record review, and reporting findings that lead to correction rather than argument.

Good internal auditors are useful long before the certification body arrives. They surface weak process control, out-of-date documented information and untested assumptions while there is still time to fix them, and they give management review something real to discuss.

Internal auditors are not expected to lead external audits. Where an internal auditor starts auditing suppliers, or moves toward certification-body work, lead auditor training is the next step.

First, second and third-party auditing

Audits are described by who audits whom. First-party audits are internal, second-party audits are carried out on a supplier by or for its customer, and third-party audits are carried out by an independent certification body. The level of course you need follows from which of these you will do.

Terminology follows ISO 19011:2026; third-party certification audits additionally follow ISO/IEC 17021-1.

Course completion certificate or personnel certification?

Completing a MEGADEMİ course gives you a course completion certificate: documentary evidence that you attended the programme and met its assessment criteria. It is issued by MEGADEMİ.

Personnel certification is different. It is granted by a personnel certification body — for example Exemplar Global — against a published auditor category, and it assesses more than training: applicants normally have to evidence audit experience, pass the scheme's examination requirements and apply to the body directly. No training provider can grant it on the body's behalf.

Who can be an internal auditor?+

Anyone with adequate process knowledge and enough independence from the area being audited. Standards do not require an external qualification; they require competence, and internal auditor training is the usual way organisations demonstrate it.

How long does internal auditor training take?+

Duration varies by programme. Each course page states the duration and the daily programme for that course.

Is an internal auditor course enough to audit suppliers?+

It is a reasonable base for second-party supplier audits, but if supplier auditing is a significant part of your role, lead auditor training gives you the audit-leadership and reporting depth that supplier audits usually demand.
